Today many people are releasing memoirs related to August 16, when the most massive rally in the history of Belarus took place. Against its backdrop, the events of the previous few days of protests merge into one heavy, crushed episode. Although, it seems to me, those first four days provided many answers to the questions that still torment some: could the resistance by force have had an effect? Was it possible to turn a spontaneous peaceful protest back into a militant one? How did the townspeople react? And much more.
Oddly enough, there aren’t many good records from that period. Back then, like other journalists, I ran around the city in a daze, dictating what was happening to several editorial offices at once (thanks to the Foreign Ministry for blocking the arrival of foreign correspondents, and the local journos were snatched away with their hands). Therefore, most of the published materials were short informational notes and small episodes that did not give a complete picture.
And therefore for me especially valuable reportage, which I was able to do for the Ukrainian edition Liga.net. And a significant part of it I did not even write, but dictated from memory to a Ukrainian colleague before going to sleep after a hectic day. There are plenty of minor inaccuracies, confused chronology and other rough edges, no analysis. But the most important thing is preserved: how it was seen and felt directly in those days. It is a pure snapshot of the moment, unspoiled by second-guessing, retrospective reflection, and other distortions of the witness.
When now I try to understand what went wrong, whether something could have been done differently, I return to this text. I suggest you read it as well.

Сегодня многие выпускают воспоминания, связанные с 16 августа, когда произошел самый массовый митинг в истории Беларуси. На его фоне события предыдущих нескольких дней протестов сливаются в один тяжелый, придавленный эпизод. Хотя, как мне кажется, в те первые четыре дня много ответов на те вопросы, которые некоторых терзают и сейчас: могло ли силовое сопротивление дать эффект? Можно ли было повернуть стихийный мирный протест назад в боевое русло? Как реагировали горожане? И многое другое.
Как ни странно, нормальных записей из того периода осталось не так много. Тогда, как и остальные журналисты, я ошалелый носился по всему городу и надиктовывал происходящее сразу в несколько редакций (“спасибо” МИДу за то, что заблокировал приезд иностранных корреспондентов, и местных журов отрывали с руками). Потому большая часть вышедших материалов – это короткие информационные заметки и небольшие эпизоды, не дающие полноту картины.
И поэтому для меня особенно ценен репортаж который я смог сделать для украинского издания Лига.нет. Причем значительную часть даже не писал, а надиктовывал по памяти украинской коллеге перед сном после суматошного дня. Там хватает мелких неточностей, сбитой хронологии и других шероховатостей, нет анализа. Но сохранено самое важное: как это виделось и ощущалось непосредственно в те дни. Чистый снимок момента, не испорченный додумываниями, рефлексией задним числом и другими искажениями свидетеля.
