In recent months, on the eve of the second anniversary of the peaceful protests, the author had to encounter more than one discussion on the question: so did the protest lose in 2020 in Belarus?
On the anniversary of the largest and most chic protest of the Belarusians in the streets of their cities, I will share my own answer to this question.
To get an honest answer to the question “whether the protest in Belarus has lost,” I suggest looking not at us, not at our unfulfilled expectations, fear, and disappointment, but at the opposite side – Lukashenko and his power junta. You can’t tell by their actions that the page has been turned and society has returned to a conditional 2019. Two years have passed. And the repression in Belarus not only does not end, but is constantly gaining momentum. During the most active phase of 2020, we could not imagine the level of absurdity and lawlessness that we see today.
Some statistics:
– As of today, 1,282 people are recognized as political prisoners, and their number is growing every week. But in reality there are dozens of times more political prisoners.
– Between August 9, 2020, and July 1, 2022, there are 11,000 criminal cases on political grounds, and some of them involve more than one person.
– Since the summer of 2020 about 15,000 people have been convicted in political criminal cases,
And about 5,000 more are awaiting trial.
Politically motivated detentions continue every day, and the ones we read about daily in the news are far from all of them.
Obviously, this behavior does not resemble that of a winner, but is indicative of tremendous fear. Lukashenko does not feel safe, because only with unprecedented open violence against unarmed and peaceful people was it possible to remove the protest from the street, and it took three months to do so. But the discontent has not disappeared, and there is no acceptance or humility in society. And so the repression does not stop.
Civil society is as if under pressure, because of which any attempt to demonstrate their position in any way is like suicide. But once the protest has left the streets and ceased to be open, it has gone underground, and this, figuratively speaking, is like a peat bog fire. On the outside everything looks peaceful and calm, but inside the fire burns.
It is only by indirect signs that one can understand that the underground exists. The most striking example is the “voyage guerrillas,” for whose suppression we had to use deadly force and amend the Criminal Code to allow the death penalty only for an attempted crime, that is, to execute for an imperfect act, for an intention, which in itself is absurd and surreal.
Another manifestation of the “unflipped page” is the “Peramog Plan.” The head of Bypol, Alesandr Azarov, voiced the figure of more than 200,000 people enrolled in the Plan. Belarusians are ready to act against Lukashenko’s occupation administration and are waiting for their time.
Continuing to fight for New Belarus, the Belarusians have created combat units in Ukraine and are fighting against Russian aggression both as part of them and as part of Ukrainian units. In various interviews, the fighters talk about their motivation in such a way that they recognize Russia as a common enemy with Ukraine, and the war with Russia in Ukraine is for them the way to a free Belarus. After all, it is thanks to Putin that Lukashenko is kept in power.
Finally, I would like to invite each of you to ask yourselves this question: Is the protest of 2020 over/lost? Do I accept the fact that I am a people, a cattle, a rat, a sheep, a sharp-footed? Have I accepted that I can be beaten, raped, forced to apologize, disown my children on camera, have my apartment jumped through windows, can I be ransacked, can I be shot at?
After all, in the end, the question “Is the protest lost?” is very individual and the answer to it consists of the sum of the answers of all, every Belarusian, as we are a civil society.
I answer that nothing is over yet. And a second round awaits us in the near future.

Так проиграл ли протест?
Последние месяцы в преддверии второй годовщины мирных протестов автору приходилось наталкиваться не на одну дискуссию на тему: так проиграл ли протест 2020 в Беларуси?
В годовщину самого масштабного и шикарного выхода беларусов на улицы своих городов поделюсь собственным ответом на этот вопрос.
Чтобы получить честный ответ на вопрос «проиграл ли протест в Беларуси», предлагаю посмотреть не на нас, не на наши несбывшиеся ожидания, страх и разочарование, а на противоположную сторону — Лукашенко и его силовую хунту. По их действиям не скажешь, что страница перевернута и общество вернулось в условный 2019 год. Прошло два года. А репрессии в Беларуси не то что не заканчиваются, а постоянно набирают обороты. В самую активную фазу 2020 мы не могли представить того уровня абсурда и беспредела, который мы видим сегодня.
Немного статистики:
— На сегодняшний день 1282 человека признаны политическими заключенными, и их количество растет каждую неделю. Но на деле сидящих за политику в десятки раз больше.
— С 9 августа 2020 года по 1 июля 2022 года возбуждено 11 000 уголовных дел по политическим мотивам, и по некоторым из них проходит не один человек, а по нескольку.
— С лета 2020 года около 15 000 тысяч человек осуждены по политическим уголовным делам,
И еще около 5 000 ожидают суда.
Каждый день продолжаются политически мотивированные задержания, и те, о которых мы ежедневно читаем в новостях, далеко не все.
Очевидно, что такое поведение не похоже на поведение победителя, а свидетельствует об огромном страхе. Лукашенко не чувствует себя в безопасности, ведь только беспрецедентным открытым насилием против безоружных и мирных людей удалось убрать протест с улицы, и на это потребовалось три месяца. Но недовольство никуда не делось,принятия и смирения в обществе не наступило. И поэтому репрессии не прекращаются.
Гражданское общество находится словно под прессом, из-за которого любые попытки хоть как-то видимо продемонстрировать свою позицию подобны самоубийству. Но уйдя с улиц, перестав быть открытым, протест перешел в подполье, и это, образно говоря, похоже на пожар на торфянике. Внешне все выглядит мирно и спокойно, но внутри горит огонь.
Лишь по косвенным признакам можно понять, что подполье существует. Самым ярким примером являются «рейсовые партизаны», для подавления которых пришлось применять боевое оружие на поражение и вносить изменения в УК, позволяющие применять смертную казнь лишь за покушение на преступление, то есть по факту казнить за несовершенное действие, за намерение, что само по себе абсурдно и сюрреалистично.
Еще одним проявлением «неперевернутой страницы» является «План Перамога». Глава Bypol Алесандр Азаров озвучил цифру в более 200 000 человек, записавшихся в План. Беларусы готовы действовать против оккупационной администрации Лукашенко и ждут своего часа.
Продолжая бороться за Новую Беларусь, беларусы создали в Украине боевые подразделения и воюют против российской агрессии как в их составе, так и в составе украинских частей. В различных интервью бойцы говорят о своей мотивации так, что они осознают Россию общим с Украиной врагом, и война с Россией в Украине для них путь к свободной Беларуси. Ведь именно благодаря Путину Лукашенко удерживается у власти.
Напоследок хочу предложить каждому из вас самому себе задать этот вопрос: закончился ли/проиграл ли протест 2020 года? Согласен ли я с тем, что я народец, быдло, крыса, овца, острокопытный? Смирился ли я с тем, что меня можно избивать, насиловать, заставлять извиняться, отрекаться от своих детей на камеру, в мою квартиру можно запрыгивать через окна, устраивать погром, в меня можно стрелять?
Ведь в конечном счете вопрос «проиграл ли протест?» очень индивидуальный и ответ на него состоит из суммы ответов всех, каждого беларуса, так как мы и есть гражданское общество.
Я отвечаю, что еще ничего не закончилось. И в скором времени нас ждет второй раунд.
